The Design Perspectiveby Sherry Mehm - 18 years of shop at home decorating experience.
Vertical blinds offer more of a contemporary feel. The long vertical louvers slide from side to side so are best suited for windows that slide to the side or sliding glass doors (door walls). They can be ordered in PVC which may be best in a home with small pets or children because they are so easy to clean and are very durable. Fabric verticals give a softer more formal look to a room. The fabric verticals can also be done with a PVC backing which like the PVC alone, is room darkening and is very energy efficient. A valance can be ordered with your verticals which gives the verticals a finished look all on their own.
The Function & Installation Perspectiveby Joe Mehm - 22 years selling and installing window coverings.
Vertical Blinds work best on sliding glass doors and windows that slide side to side. They are great for rentals, around pets, windows that get a lot of sunlight and for homes that may be near a dirt road. The sheer verticals are a more upscale, formal look and wouldn't be recommended for rentals or around pets. The main reason that verticals, especially PVC verticals work best in these applications is due to the fact that they stand upright and don't have anywhere for dust and dirt to settle (horizontal blinds are like a bunch of little shelves). They also work great in these areas because they are easy to maintain. Just use a little soap and water on a rag.
Installation is a little trickier than our horizontals but our installation instructions will help you get it done in no time. The sheer verticals are actually two treatments in one. They have the standard PVC vertical and then there is a sheer material that sort of ripple-folds over the slats.
